How to choose a cable reel: capacity, cable, protection and housing
Short answer: Choose the cable length and conductor size for the job first, then the reel that holds it, then the protection rating for the environment. Bemis reels hold 15 to 100 m of cable (3×1.5, 3×2.5 or 5×2.5 mm²), come in polypropylene or steel-sheet drums with IP20 to IP67 protection, with or without sockets, and some models have thermal protection.
| Reel type | Cable capacity | Cable | Protection | Drum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plastic cable reel | 15, 25, 50 m | 3×1.5 mm² | IP44, IP54 | polypropylene |
| Metal cable reel | 25–50 m | 3×1.5, 3×2.5 mm² | IP20–IP54 | 0.7–0.8 mm steel sheet |
| Metal cable reel (three-phase) | 40, 50 m | 5×2.5 mm² | IP44, IP67 | 1 mm steel sheet |
| Cable reel with trolley | 100 m | 5×2.5 mm² | IP44, IP67 | 1 mm steel sheet |
Frequently asked questions
Why must a cable reel be fully unwound under high load?
Cable left on the drum cannot shed heat, so the permissible current is lower when the reel is wound. Unwind completely for high loads and follow the ratings marked on the reel.
When do I need a three-phase (5×2.5 mm²) reel?
When the reel feeds three-phase equipment or CEE 5-pin sockets; single-phase reels use 3-core cable.
What does thermal protection do?
It disconnects the supply when the reel overheats, for example when it is used wound at high load.
